The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority commissioned and Mkhulu EDP performed the Matsoku to Polihali 132kV Transmission Line project, which operated from September 2019 to 2021. The goal of the project was to build a new 132kV transmission line from Matsoku to the Polihali substation site while also improving an existing line from Maputsoe to Matsoku.

The scope of work includes the building of new transmission towers, conductor stringing, and supporting infrastructure such as access roads and foundation pads. In order to accommodate the new transmission line, existing infrastructure had to be relocated.

Safety and environmental concerns were prioritized throughout the project, and all work was completed in accordance with international best practices and industry standards. Furthermore, the project was managed in close collaboration with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that daily activities were not disrupted.

When finished, the new transmission line will improve the region’s energy transmission capacity and reliability, enhancing access to electricity for communities and aiding the development of Lesotho’s economy. The project will also help the country cut carbon emissions and alleviate the effects of climate change by allowing renewable energy sources to be integrated into the national grid.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

  • Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.

  • Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
  • Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
  • Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
