Under the direction of Proconics, Mkhulu EDP is currently executing a highly specialized infrastructure project involving the new MTS (AQUILA) connection. This project includes all civil and electrical works, as well as commissioning activities, and is being delivered under a Procurement and Construct contract. A critical element of the project is the Loop IN and OUT connection to the existing Hydra-Poseidon 400 kV line, along with 160 kilometers of OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) stringing.
Mkhulu EDP’s technical capabilities and execution excellence have been instrumental in managing this complex undertaking. With a strong emphasis on precision and compliance, the team is delivering high-performance infrastructure solutions that support both current demands and future scalability within South Africa’s power transmission network.
Once complete, the AQUILA connection will significantly enhance network redundancy and reliability, helping to stabilize energy transmission across a broader region. The inclusion of OPGW stringing not only improves system communication and protection capabilities but also ensures that the infrastructure aligns with global best practices in modern energy transmission.
This project highlights Mkhulu EDP’s commitment to engineering excellence and its ability to deliver complex turnkey solutions in collaboration with leading clients like Proconics. It represents another strategic milestone in South Africa’s drive to strengthen its power grid and deliver uninterrupted energy to communities and industries nationwide.

The Challenge :
There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:
Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.
- Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
- Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.
The Result :
To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:
- Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
- Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
- Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
