The Kappa Sterrekus 765 kV transmission line project for Eskom PDP was completed between May 2014 and August 2015, with Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd serving as the prime contractor. The project called for the installation of a 62-kilometer single-circuit transmission line with six bundled tern conductors. The transmission line traveled through mountainous areas inhabited by environmentally protected species, necessitating cautious planning and execution.

One of the biggest obstacles encountered during the project was the position of some towers that did not allow crane or vehicle access. This necessitated the hand-building of these structures, which was an arduous and time-consuming task. Furthermore, the construction of these towers necessitated the use of helicopters, which added to the project’s complexity.

Despite the difficulties, the project was completed on time and within budget. The Kappa Sterrekus 765 kV transmission line now supplies a reliable source of power to the surrounding areas, helping to improve the lives of the local communities.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.
Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
