The Gamma Kappa A 765kV transmission line project was completed between 2011 and 2012. The project’s client was Eskom PDP, and the major contractor was Viscas Corporation. The project’s subcontractor was Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd.

The project scope includes the installation of 224 towers from the 703B and 701 Type series. The project also included the stringing of 100 kilometers of the single circuit – six-tern line.

The towers were installed in a meticulous process that included site preparation, foundation building, tower assembly, and erection. The towers were installed in a way that ensures the transmission line’s structural integrity while also ensuring reliability and safety.

Stringing the transmission line required the use of specific equipment and techniques. The line was built to meet 765kV high voltage requirements and was tested to guarantee compliance with safety rules and industry standards.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

  • Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.

  • Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
  • Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
  • Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
