2011-2012

The Ferrum Deviation 275kV Transmission Line project, completed in 2011–2012, aims to upgrade the Ferrum substation from a 275/132kV substation to a 400/275/132kV substation by deviating the existing 275kV lines. Eskom PDP commissioned the project, which was carried out by Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd.

The project’s scope of work included many activities, such as the deviation of existing 275 kV transmission lines, the installation of new structures, and the construction of a new sub-station. The deviation of the existing lines was required to allow the new 400/275/132 kV substation, and the installation of new structures was required to provide support for the new transmission lines.

The building of the new substation included multiple phases, including site preparation, foundation work, and the installation of substation equipment. Clearing the site, grading the soil, and preparing it for construction were all part of the site preparation process. The placement of concrete foundations for the substation equipment was part of the foundation work phase. The substation equipment, including transformers, switchgear, and associated control and protection systems, was installed during the erection phase.

Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd. adhered to stringent safety and quality standards throughout the project, ensuring that it was completed safely and effectively. With the successful completion of the Ferrum Deviation 275 kV Transmission Line project, Eskom PDP now has a modern and reliable sub-station capable of fulfilling the region’s increasing demand for power.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

  • Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.

  • Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
  • Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
  • Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
