Eskom PDP

Mkhulu-EDP

May 2015

The Duvha-Kendal 400 kV transmission line lift project was completed in May 2015 on behalf of Eskom PDP. Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd. was in charge of the project, which entailed raising the vertical clearance between the transmission line and the new Kusile Road.

Eskom LES devised a solution, which included placing a new 518H tower to replace the existing 512A tower. This would enhance the vertical clearance between the transmission line and the new road, ensuring that the line was not damaged.

Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd. collaborated closely with Eskom PDP to guarantee that all safety and quality criteria were met during the project. This entailed ensuring that the new tower was built to the proper specifications and that the current transmission line was not damaged during the lift process.

The project was finished satisfactorily, and the vertical clearance between the transmission line and the new Kusile Road was extended to the needed standard. This has ensured that the transmission line stays safe and secure while also providing consistent power delivery to the nearby neighborhoods.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

  • Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.

  • Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
  • Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
  • Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
