Sinohydro and Mkhulu EDP are currently undertaking the construction of the Oya Collector Stations, Hybrid Station, and the Kappa Feeder Bay as part of a strategic project to enhance South Africa’s power transmission and energy storage infrastructure. Delivered under a Procurement and Construct Contract, this initiative includes comprehensive Civil Works, Primary Plant, and Secondary Plant systems, as well as the development of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Platform Civils. The project is currently in progress and represents a major step forward in the integration of hybrid energy solutions.
As the principal contractor, Mkhulu EDP continues to demonstrate its capability in managing complex infrastructure projects that demand both precision and deep technical expertise. Through this collaboration, Mkhulu EDP is meeting the rigorous construction and engineering standards set by Sinohydro, ensuring quality, safety, and reliability throughout all phases of the build.
Once completed, this infrastructure will significantly improve the regional transmission capacity and grid flexibility, particularly as South Africa moves toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. The Oya Collector and Hybrid Stations, along with the Kappa Feeder Bay, will serve as key nodes in supporting energy distribution, while the BESS platform will enhance energy storage capabilities for better demand management.
This ongoing project highlights the strength of the partnership between Sinohydro and Mkhulu EDP, and reflects their shared vision for delivering world-class energy infrastructure that supports the country’s development goals. It also positions both organisations as forward-thinking leaders in the transition toward a more resilient and diversified power system.

The Challenge :
There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:
Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.
- Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
- Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.
The Result :
To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:
- Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
- Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
- Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
