Eskom PDP and Mkhulu EDP successfully collaborated on a critical infrastructure development involving the construction of a 33-kilometre, 132 kV transmission line from Kappa Substation to Oya. This project, which commenced in April 2024 and is currently still in progress, forms part of Eskom PDP’s broader initiative to enhance power delivery across key regions. The scope of work includes detailed route surveying and pegging, foundation excavation and construction, tower assembly and erection, as well as conductor stringing and OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) regulation. Executed under a Procurement and Construct Contract, this project demands precision, technical expertise, and efficient coordination.

Mkhulu EDP, acting as the principal contractor, has demonstrated its strong capability in delivering high-voltage infrastructure, ensuring that all works are carried out in strict compliance with Eskom PDP’s engineering and quality standards. Their performance on this ongoing project reinforces their track record in safely managing complex builds within tight timelines and regulatory frameworks.

Once completed, the 132 kV line will significantly enhance power transmission capabilities between Kappa and Oya, strengthening the regional grid’s reliability and resilience. The progress achieved thus far reflects the strength of the partnership between Eskom PDP and Mkhulu EDP, contributing meaningfully to the national objective of ensuring uninterrupted and efficient electricity supply to communities and industries throughout South Africa.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

  • Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.

  • Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
  • Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
  • Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
