The Apollo-Cahora Basa Emergency Tower Recovery project began in April 2019, with Eskom PDP as the client and Mkhulu EDP as the principal contractor. The project’s scope included emergency recovery on the Apollo Cahora Basa No. 1 533 kV HVDV transmission line between towers 1110 and 1114.
The project’s goal was to restore the transmission line to full operational capacity following damage caused by extreme weather conditions. The damage caused the collapse of two transmission towers, disrupting power delivery to the region and causing severe economic losses.
The recovery effort included a variety of tasks, including the dismantling of damaged towers and the installation of new ones in their place. The project team worked around the clock to repair the transmission line as soon as possible while causing the least amount of interruption to the surrounding environment.
Aside from the tower recovery, the project team also performed extensive testing and commissioning of the transmission line to ensure that it was operating at peak capacity. The project was finished smoothly and on time, and it is projected to make a substantial contribution to the region’s stable and efficient electricity supply.

The Challenge :
There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:
Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.
- Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
- Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.
The Result :
To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:
- Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
- Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
- Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
