The Masa Ngwedi 765kV and 400kV Transmission Line 1 and 2 (Section E) project, commissioned by Eskom PDP and managed by Eskom LES, was executed by Mkhulu EDP as the main contractor. The project encompassed the construction of 37.5 kilometers of 400 kV and 37.4 kilometers of 765 kV transmission lines, comprising 90 towers (400 kV) and 87 towers (765 kV) in parallel, encircling the Mogwase area in the North West province.

The primary objective of the project was to enhance the transmission network’s reliability and capacity in the Mogwase area. By erecting high-voltage transmission lines, the project aimed to meet the growing energy demands and reinforce the power supply system.

The project implementation involved various stages, including tower foundation installation, tower assembly, conductor stringing, and line commissioning. The transmission towers were structured in a dual circuit layout, facilitating bidirectional power transmission simultaneously.

To ensure the project’s efficiency and safety, specialized equipment and skilled personnel were deployed. Additionally, environmental and social considerations were integral to the project’s planning and execution processes.

Upon completion, the Masa Ngwedi 765kV and 400kV Transmission Line project significantly enhanced the energy infrastructure in the Mogwase area, providing a reliable electricity supply to the region. The successful execution of the project underscored the project team’s capability to deliver complex infrastructure projects within stipulated timelines and budgetary constraints.

The Challenge :

There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:

  • Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.

  • Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
  • Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
