The Ankerlig Sterrekus 400kV Double Circuit Transmission Line project was completed between February 2017 and October 2018 and was commissioned by Eskom PDP, with Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects (Pty) Ltd serving as the main contractor. The project included the installation of a 17-kilometer transmission line with 54 towers, providing a double-circuit transmission line around the Atlantis region in Cape Town, Western Cape.
The project’s goal was to build a high-voltage transmission line to increase the Western Cape’s transmission network’s reliability and capacity. The new transmission line was built to boost power to the system and accommodate the region’s expanding energy demands.
The transmission line was built in stages, including the placement of tower foundations, tower assembly, conductor stringing, and line commissioning. The towers were built in a dual circuit layout, allowing power to be sent in both directions at the same time.
To guarantee the work was done efficiently and safely, the project needed the deployment of specialized equipment and skilled personnel. Environmental and social concerns were also taken into account during the project’s development and execution.
When completed, the Ankerlig Sterrekus 400 kV Double Circuit Transmission Line strengthened the Western Cape’s energy infrastructure and offered a steady source of electricity to the region. The successful completion of the project highlighted the project team’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects on schedule and within budget.

The Challenge :
There were several challenges that the project team may have faced during the erection of 69 towers and stringing 42 kilometers of the line for Eskom in 2005. Some of these challenges could include:
Terrain: Tower erection and line stringing may have been harder in rocky or mountainous terrain.
- Weather: Weather may have hampered the project. Rain or heavy winds could have slowed operations, making project deadlines impossible.
- Safety: Working with high-voltage power transmission cables requires safety. The team may have struggled to teach and equip project personnel safely.
The Result :
To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:
- Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
- Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
