The principal contractor for Eskom’s OCGT Atlantis 400kV double circuit loop-ins was Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc in 2006. 30 513 DC and 515 Type towers were installed for tie-ins. About 6 kilometers of twin circuit – triple tern and twin dinosaur line were strung. This report details the project.

Eskom’s massive OCGT Atlantis 400kV double circuit loop-ins project needs 30 513 DC and 515 Type series towers. South Africa’s Western Cape town Atlantis hosted the project.

Two transmission line circuits were installed and looped in at the Atlantis substation. The project increased power capacity and transmission network dependability.

Tower erection needs meticulous planning and execution. Galvanized steel towers were built to withstand the area’s severe winds and adverse weather. Each tower was over 15 tons and 30 meters tall.

Cranes and specialized equipment were installed in the towers. Concrete was poured to stabilize the tower foundations. The towers were built and anchored to the foundations.

Transmission lines followed tower installation. The lines were twin dinosaur and triple tern circuits. Specialized equipment was used to string the cables between the towers, requiring precision.

Stringing transmission lines was complicated and required tensioners and pullers. The ropes have to be strung at a certain tension to withstand the wind and weather.

Time and budget were met. Transmission lines have increased power capacity and network dependability.

The OCGT Atlantis 400kV double-circuit loop-ins project requires extensive planning and implementation. 30 513 DC and 515 Type series towers and 6 kilometers of twin circuit–triple tern and twin dinosaur line were installed. The project increased power capacity and transmission network dependability. The project was a success for Eskom and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, finishing on schedule and within budget.

The Challenge :

It takes a lot of effort to install 1,518 D-type towers, triple dinosaurs, and bulls as part of a project. Several difficulties may have arisen during the project’s execution. Here are some potential challenges and solutions:

  • Site accessibility: If the building site was far away, moving equipment, tools, and materials may have been problematic. The contractor may have overcome this problem by building a temporary access road or using helicopters to deliver items.

  • Logistics and planning: 1,518 D-type towers and equipment needed careful planning and execution. The contractor may have had to carefully schedule each installation phase, taking into account equipment and material availability, weather, and crew availability. The contractor may have used project management software to track work and predict delays to address this difficulty.

  • Safety and security: Falls from heights, electrical dangers, and heavy machinery accidents may have endangered workers and the public on the building site. The contractor would have had to provide PPE, educate workers, and watch the building site to prevent unauthorized access.

The Result :

To overcome these challenges, the project team may have implemented several strategies, including:

  • Planning and preparation: The team may have analyzed the site to discover topographical or weather issues that could affect the project. They may have also trained and outfitted workers with safety gear to work safely on the job.
  • Flexibility: The crew may have added time to the project plan for weather or terrain difficulties. They may have been adaptable to shifting work situations.
  • Collaboration: Transdeco, the main contractor, and Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects cc, the subcontractor, may have collaborated to execute the project on schedule and within budget.
