Growing Strong: Mkhulu EDP’s Journey from 30 to to 800 Employees

Mkhulu Electro Distribution Projects has its roots in historical Over Head Transmission Line construction company, Eagle Power Transmission (EPT) which was founded in 1993.

Mkhulu was established in the year 2000. The company experienced exponential growth that saw it acquiring EPT resources. It was registered as a (Pty) Ltd in 2009.

The company started out with a staff complement of between 30 – 80 employees during project execution and increased steadily to 250 – 800 employees currently.

Mkhulu’s Emphasis on Internal Resources and Long-Term

It was established by two main founding members who saw fit it to establish an entity that would integrate long serving employees as shareholders. This was meant to recognise their commitment and loyalty to the company.

The company has gone through various transformations in ownership, capacity and demographics but it has not strayed from its basic creed: despite its size and scale of operation, it still operates like a family entity. Some of the traits that could be associated with its family-orientated ethos include the fact that shareholders and senior management prioritise employees’ well-being, long-term retention of employees even when there are projects under execution, growth of internal resources and general ‘looking-out-for-each-other’ world view. Mkhulu currently holds a BBBEE level 1 as a reflection of its commitment to the transformation agenda. Mkhulu implemented its transformation goals in 2013 where a diverse and dynamic ownership and leadership structure was established.
